Bala Lake Railway
Steam Trains North Wales
Enjoy the beautiful sights of southern Snowdonia and discover the charm of our narrow-gauge steam trains on a nine mile return journey along the shores of Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid), the largest natural lake in Wales. See the magnificent mountain vistas across the lake, dominated by Arenig Fawr and the Aran mountains.
Catch the train at Llanuwchllyn station or at Bala (Penybont), sit back and take a leisurely journey behind one of our historic steam locomotives, all rescued from the slate quarries of North Wales and now lovingly restored. From Llanuwchllyn, the line passes through tranquil pastures before reaching the tip of the lake and following the southern shore for the rest of the journey to Bala, crossing rivers and mountain streams, but never straying too far from the lake. You can break your journey at either end to explore Bala or Llanuwchllyn or stop off by the lake at the mid-way station at Llangower.
Our engine sheds at Llanuwchllyn are usually accessible to the public, and here you can view the largest collection of operational ex-quarry steam engines in Wales. You can also take a look at the normally private domain of the traditional signalman with a visit to the station signal box which has been controlling trains at the station since 1896.
Our gift shop sells a variety of souvenirs and the station café at Llanuwchllyn serves a variety of hot and cold snacks and a mouth-watering selection of cakes.
We’re open most days from Easter to early October and also during the half-terms in February and October. Santa pays us a visit during December, and we hold a number of special events throughout the year.
Our trains and stations are wheelchair accessible, and each train can carry up to two wheelchairs.
We’re also the home of “Alice the Little Welsh Engine” and her sister Winifred, famously rescued and returned to Wales from the USA, and which between them feature in three of the wonderful children’s books written by Pauline Hazelwood.
Timetable and fares information, as well as details of all our special events can be found on our website at www.bala-lake-railway.co.uk
